Thursday 10th November 2012 “Derby Day”

Chadderton Park Vets vs. Chadderton Park Legends

What a truly historical encounter this game was to prove, with bragging rights at stake, this epic was the true derby that all neutrals wanted to see.

It was the smooth flowing football from the Legends that saw them take the lead with what can only be described as a Brazilian like move slotted past the Vets keeper young Griff by the oldest member of the Legends Jimmy Cunningham who showed even at pushing 60 he still has it!!!!

Then with the game flowing from end to end, and the Vets having the best of the next 5 minutes, a shot from Richie which was goal bound for the Vets, and as he turned to celebrate he failed to see the outstretched arm of the Legends Keeper Stevo Stevenson who pulled a save that even Gordon Banks would have been proud of.

Then the Legends took a 2 goal lead through Jimmy Adamson and there seemed no way back for the Vets who were staring down on relegation.

Just before the half finished there was another goal bound effort from Mark Baxendale of the Vets with Stevo Stevenson diving the wrong way, however once again with an outstretched leg the ball was tipped over the bar, by what must prove to be a Man of The Match performance from the Legends keeper!!

As they moved into the 2nd half after a well-deserved break for the teams, the Vets struck back with 2 goals in quick succession from Frank Maddocks and Graham the big fella who pulled the game back to 2-2 and all of a sudden the match was hanging in the balance.

then with some cagey play from both teams up stood the rising star with his new boots on it was the one and only Lenny Lengden who tipped the scales once again and put the Legends 3-2 up on the night with a piece of his own master class in how goals win games!!

Then with the Vets playing their final throw of the dice on came Chaddy The Owl in disguise as Wayne Hurst who showed that what he lacks in tracking back/tackling and actually running for the team, he always has a little goal in his back pocket and with what can only be described as a complete mis-kicked deflection, the ball found its way into the Legends net and scores were once again level at 3-3.

With the clock ticking away, it became a case of will Mark Baxendale actually manage to kick every one of the Legends and get away with it, and with Gavin Burn snapping at his hills all night like a little Jack Russell, you could see the fear in his eyes, then with 2 minutes remaining, up stepped Terry “He’s all left Foot Jennings” who had managed to finally shrug off the disappointment of losing the captaincy for the Legends to Stevo Stevenson, and with him beating two of the Vets then slotting home past Griff in the corner, with a Goal of pure quality that would win any game the decider was born and the Legends had triumphed 4-3!!!

Legends celebrate their above victory
